This weekend was the boys' annual father's and sons camping trip. It happens every year and every year I look forward to one on one girls time with Kendall.
This year, she was invited to her friend's birthday slumber party. She was all smiles when she got the invite, all of her friends would be there.
2 days before the party she told me she decided she didn't want to go, she would rather spend the weekend with me.
I was skeptical.
Anyone that knows Kendall knows that she is a social butterfly. She never misses an opportunity to play with a friend, let alone a sleepover with 14 of her friends!
So i drilled her. Did something happen at school, did you get your feelings hurt, was somebody mean to you? No, no, and no were her answers.
And so, I called the mother and apologized for rescinding on the previous RSVP that Kendall could go, but that she wouldn't be there.
I took the kids out of school early so the boys could take off camping and Kendall and I headed to the mall.
We shopped, we ate pretzels, we looked at all the cute little puppies and picked our favorites. We rode the escalator up and down and back up again.
We dropped by a friend's bridal shower and then came home.
We played Mario Brothers Wii, and got in our comfy jammies and settled in to watch rented movies and eat homemade skookie.
We talked, and laughed and pampered ourselves with painted toenails and every smelly lotion we could find in my bathroom.
Then Kendall got to sleep in my bed.
Just before we fell asleep, I asked her why she decided not to go to the birthday sleepover and stay with me.
She said, "Because I never get to see you as much. I go to school everyday and see my friends but I don't get to play with just you hardly ever. I miss you!"
....my heart melted.
It's like i was just entered into a popularity contest between me and her friends....and i won!
Who knows how much longer she'll choose me over her friends, but I'll take it while I can! :)

I love that! Okay so my eyes are a little teary right now from this sweet story but I know how I feel when mine choose me! I love having dates with my kids too. You are such a good mom Anna!
That is cool Anna. Embrace while you can. Marlie is 8 and I think I am already out of the "cool" club.
Okay, what's 'skookie'? Can I have some?
That is the sweetest thing ever!!! I only hope that Ruthie will pick me over her friends if given the choice!!!
